Company summary:
Ecolog operates in the sustainable forestry sector. Based out of the Amazon, the company processes and markets FSC certified wood for the construction sector. The current product line includes lumber, flooring, and construction systems. In the future, Ecolog also hopes to produce certified furniture and decks, and enter other markets such as eco-tourism and carbon sequestration.

Company description:

Ecolog was founded in 2002 as a supplier of sustainably-logged wood.  The company owns 29,695 hectares of land certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in which it practices responsible forest management.

Ecolog has opened for business at a time when the world is increasingly concerned by deforestation, particularly of tropical forests, and is looking for alternatives that minimize environmental impact while providing positive social returns.  The high demand for certified wood has already caused its price to increase dramatically- costing nearly $600 per cubic meter as opposed to about $130 for non-certified wood.  This industry will continue to be an attractive investment as demand continues to rise for a scarce raw material.  Ecolog has a major competitive advantage in owning its own area of native forest, a rarity among other companies in the sector.  Additionally, Ecolog operates its own sawmill, thereby cutting costs by increasing the business' operational efficiency.

Ecolog is looking to expand its already solid 3.2% share of the market for certified wood.  It seeks to make a positive impact in an industry where only 2% of the 24.5 million cubic meters of wood sold each year is certified.

Ecolog's chief executive, Fabio de Albuquerque, is an entrepreneur who is deeply concerned with the preservation of native forests.  In 1982, he founded  Alfacon Engineering, Ltd., a building company that works in the environmental, financial and public sectors.  Albuquerque is a member of the Board of Directors for Imaflora, the Institute for Forestry and Agricultural Certification and Mangement, and the Board of Directors for Alphaville Urban Planning, Inc
