Country: Mexico
Sector(s): Retail for 'Green' Consumer Goods
Investment sought: $500,000
Company summary:
Aires de Campo is a leader in the branding and commercialization of more than 120 organic products through diverse specialized sales centers called "BioCentros."
Company description:
The investment sought will be used for the commercial expansion of our network of BioCentros. BioCentros are distribution warehouses designed to serve groups of between 500 and 750 regular clients in an attractive and didactic atmosphere that promotes direct bonding between clients and producers who directly supply the BioCentros with a product line that includes nearly 180 products from 20 sites in Mexico. With suitable financing of this model, carefully developed over two years and working at a basic level from mid-year, it will become a structure able to take care of a market of around 50,000 families who could generate millions of pesos from hundreds of millions of purchases annually for an important group of national producers.
A good part of the success which we have had in the presentation of this idea-though much is due to the producers, consumers and small producers-is owed to the general context of the organic production in the world. Currently, there are more than 20 million hectares cultivated in nearly 100 countries, and production increases world-wide at almost 30% annually. Market penetration indexes in developed countries oscillate between 2% in EU and 4% in Germany. However, the most significant fact is that this market, which exceeds $20 billion (US), tends to play an important role in a short period of time. The Mexican market follows this pattern, with the most important distinctions due to Mexico's biological richness-the fourth most biologically diverse country on the planet-and the advantage of traditionally small production areas with highly available labor in most rural areas.
Thanks to an intensive selection process for small producers, Aires de Campo has been first to present the market with organically-processed milk, beef, prepared salads, processed grains and recently, with organic ice cream and poultry products. This strategic position has been reinforced by our alliance with the National Union of Certified Organic producers (Unapro, A.C.), funded by the Aires de Campo producers with the goal of union promotion and whose creation has captured the interest of more than 150 groups of producers.
The expansion of direct commercial ties between producers and consumers based on sustainable trade principles creates a promising basis for environmental and social benefits. From a consumer's personal health and quality of life considerations, it is clear that both of these have been reasons for rapid growth of worldwide demand. Socially, the premium paid for these products combined with fair trade, makes organic production a part of promotion of sustainable rural environments. From an ecological perspective, this is a type of production that not only does not harm the environment, but actually contributes to restoring biodiversity in the agro-ecosystems where these products are cultivated.
