Nandan works with local farming communities to develop reliable access to clean and safe energy. Its model provides a steady income to more than 15,000 households and reliable energy through a replicable, scalable model.

India’s energy crisis:

  • India’s energy production is based on non-renewable sources like oil and coal, the latter accounting for 70% of the country’s energy production.

  • In addition, only 44% of rural villages in India have reliable access to energy.

  • High population growth and environmental pressures require alternative energy sources to be developed so the entire population can enjoy access to energy without compromising natural resources or human health.

Nandan Biomatrix: Making a difference

  • Nandan has developed a farmer-centric approach by working with small farmers that own degraded marginal lands and helping them cultivate jatropha for biofuel production.

  • After 8 years of extensive research, Nandan has developed and received global patents for 4 hybrids of jatropha seeds with higher oil yield and new cultivation methods that maximize production. Productivity (in tons per hectare) has more than doubled. To minimize waste Nandan also develops muesli and aloe vera by-products.

  • The company’s inclusive model provides small loans to farmers through local banks, allowing rural communities to purchase land and/or develop their own jatropha plantations. Nandan currently works in ten Indian provinces and has cultivated approximately 40,000 acres of jatropha.

Nandan’s environmental and social impact:

  • The 40,000 acres of jatropha allow Nandan to sequester of 3.2 million tons of carbon. Jatropha biofuels provide clean energy to large communities and replace polluting, GHG-intensive options.

  • Nandan currently provides a steady income to over 15,000 small farmers. The company provides technical assistance, develops “Jatropha Centers” in all cultivation locations, trains staff, and hires local entrepreneurs to be part of the process.

  • After providing assistance with planting and cultivation, Nandan divides all jatropha production, allowing local farmers to keep 50% of all production.
