Kimel adds value to agricultural waste and manufactures organic fertilizers and products for the construction industry. Its model is highly replicable and effective in fighting the contamination of key watersheds in Colombia.
The context: Agriculture and water contamination in Colombia
The alcohol industry in Colombia is responsible for high levels of watershed contamination in the country. For each liter of alcohol produced, 12 liters of water are contaminated with rapidly fermenting bio-waste.
The use and runoff of chemical pesticides and fertilizers also contaminates key watersheds.
As biofuels and large-scale agriculture expand, systems that process bio-waste properly and organic agriculture are imperative in order to prevent further contamination.
Kimel: Making a difference
Kimel processes bio-waste created by sugar cane-based biofuel companies, using it as raw material for the creation of adhesives used in the construction sector and for a line of organic agriculture products, such as fertilizers and pesticides.
The company currently processes 550 tons of bio waste on a monthly basis, preventing disposal of this waste into waterways. It has a line of 30 organic products, exports to 15 countries and holds certifications for 17 of its products.
The company holds two patents for its products, which are composed of previously untreated organic waste.
We want to become a reference for other companies, and to transfer our technology around different countries.
Karla Kalle, Kimel Marketing Manager
Environmental impact:
Kimel’s operation is 100% environmentally friendly, producing water instead of consuming it through evaporation systems and producing zero waste by composting materials that cannot be reused.
Kimel prevents 550 tons of bio-waste from being discarded into waterways on a monthly basis. It also prevents land pollution and soil nutrient depletion caused by the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Its model is replicable, which means biofuel companies around the world can use it as an alternative to process their waste. Kimel is committed to training and transferring its know-how to local workers.
The road ahead:
Kimel envisions transferring its technology to two other countries. The transfer process includes the creation of two bio-waste processing plants. The company is also in the process of developing its full line of products for the construction sector.
The company is seeking strategic partnerships that allow it to strengthen its marketing strategies and position itself as a recognized partner for waste management activities.
