Intaran prevents deforestation and promotes sustainable agriculture in Indonesia through the use of the “Tree of Life.”
Market Opportunity:
Indonesia consumes upward of 4 million metric tonnes of inorganic fertilizer per year and demand is set to increase with the expansion of Palm Oil production.
The sustainability of inorganic fertilizer has come into question since production relies on non renewable resources like minerals from mines and high energy processes such as the Haber process.
Eutrophication has mainly been caused by inorganic fertilizer run-off due to the high concentration of nitrogen rich compounds.
Unique Business Solution:
- Intaran Indonesia uses raw materials extracted from neem trees to make oilcake and neem oil that can be used as fertilizer and organic pesitcide. These raw materials can also be used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, supplementing the earnings from organic fertilizer and pesticide production.
Local communities are one of our most important partners, since we rely upon their willingness and cooperation to help us cultivate and harvest neem trees.
Mr. Ujang Adhari, Director Intaran
Environmental & Social Impacts:
Almost 24 million people in rural areas live below the poverty line and require employment. Intaran employs 17 people with sights to employ more as the company grows.
Intaran works with local communities to plant and grow neem trees which not only produce raw materials but also improve soil conditions thanks to their water-retaining properties.
Intaran provides technical assistance and training on the environmental benefits of organic farming.
Successes:
The company has developed a line of 15 products, including organic fertilizers, pesticides, cosmetics, and natural medicine. Different parts of the neem tree are used to their full potential.
Intaran has reforested more than 200 hectares with neem trees and has supplied over 30,000 seeds to local communities.
Has prevented further deforestation in three provinces by providing an alternative and stable economic activity to the communities.
Reforestation has taken place in areas that were considered deserted and where activities such as tin mining were once conducted.
Future Plans & Challenges:
Intaran is currently exporting to Australia and Japan, and expects to enter the US market in the coming years.
Intaran is seeking investment to purchase more deserted land and plant more neem trees to satisfy the demand for raw materials.
