Sinen En-tech produces waste treatment technologies for industrial boiler system steam. Its patented micro-filtration and membrane systems purify used steam into high temperature water, which is reused or safely disposed without further treatment.

Market Opportunity:

  • Steam is essential to many industrial processes, but producing steam requires large quantities of water and energy. As it is used, the steam becomes contaminated with metals and organic contaminants, resulting in large amounts of wastewater.

  • Based on China’s industrial steam boiler market, Sinen En-tech estimates the market size is roughly RMB 30 billion. If the entire industrial boiler market in China installed Sinen’s technology, Sinen estimates it could save 67.2 million tonnes of coal each year, not including electric boilers.

Unique Business Solution:

  • Business Model: Typically, in order to reuse industrial waste steam, the steam must cool to be treated and then must be reheated for reuse, which is costly and requires fossil-fuel based energy. Sinen En-tech’s patented technology treats industrial waste steam at high temperatures, reducing energy costs and creating steam that is ready for reuse. Sinen is responsible for the production, installation, and trial operation of the condensed water treatment equipment.

  • Competitive Advantage:

    • Sinen En-tech is the only Chinese company that has developed and patented a series of high temperature condensed water treatment products that save energy under high temperature, are highly secure, use effective automation technology, and prevent waste residue from blocking the system. International competitors exist, such as Armstrong, but the company has significant cost advantages over foreign producers.
  • The high temperature condensed water treatment system costs between RMB 6 and 7 million but creates annual savings of RMB 10 million; the system pays for itself within 7 to 9 months.

  • Key processes of Sinen En-tech’s technology are standardized for easy scaleability yet flexible enough to adjust the technology to different regions.

  • Sinen En-tech technology is applicable to a variety of industries, including the oil-refining, steel and iron, thermal power, pharmaceutical, and alcohol industries. The majority of Sinen’s oil-refining customers are from Sinopec, one of the three largest state-owned Chinese oil companies. The oil-refining industry alone produces over 3 billion tonnes of wastewater annually.

Environmental & Social Impacts:

  • The condensed water treatment equipment recycles an average of 100 tonnes of water per hour and saves 1 tonne of coal per hour. Operating 24 hours a day for 350 days, customers can save up to 840,000 tonnes of water and 8,400 tonnes of coal per year.

  • Since its founding Sinen En-tech has helped its clients save 25.2 million tonnes of water and 252 thousand tonnes of coal.

Successess:

  • Sinopec Tianjin Branch Company has saved approximately 3 million tonnes of water since November 2004 after adopting Sinen’s steam treatment technology. The technology also helped them save 30,000 tonnes of coal, avoiding an equivalent 78,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Future Plans & Challenges:

  • Sinen En-tech seeks investment to further its R&D efforts, recruit talented employees, and expand the sales team.

  • Sinen En-tech plans to make an IPO in the next 3-5 years.

  • In the long term, Sinen En-tech aims to be the most recognized brand name in the energy-saving space.

Partnering with New Ventures:

  • New Ventures China mentored Sinen En-tech on Energy Management Contracts and business planning. Following the training, Sinen established a research department to investigate and develop Energy Management Contracts to scale Sinen’s business.
